Sharon Taylor
Crosby ISD
Elementary Teacher of the Year

For the 2006-2007 Elementary Teacher of the Year, Crosby ISD honored Sharon Taylor, an eleven year veteran kindergarten teacher who graduated from the University of Houston in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. As a faculty member at the Crosby Kindergarten Center (CKC), she is a very active teacher who has been an active member of the Inclusion Team, Campus Measurement Committee, District-Wide Educational Improvement Committee, and has served as a mentor for Pre-Kindergarten teachers. She was the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year in 1997, the Crosby Kindergarten Center Teacher of the Year in 2000 and 2006, and was honored at the Goldin Foundation for Excellence in Education in 2006.
Ms. Taylor is convinced that she was destined to become an educator, and is grateful for all the teachers who inspired her, believed in her, and encouraged her to always set goals and accomplish them. Sharon places a great value on being a role model because she was blessed to have role models who built her self-esteem, confidence, and self-discipline. These role models were teachers who always took the time to make a difference in her life. One such role model, who motivated her to becoming a teacher, expected only the best work from Sharon, and made her feel intelligent and gave her the encouragement to be a risk-taker. As the first member of an eight-sibling family to graduate from college, Sharon says that she became a teacher in order to give back what she had been given – a chance to be successful.
In terms of her most significant contribution to education, Sharon believes that her greatest contribution has been her involvement in the inclusion team on the CKC campus. She believes that she has a certain connection to any child who is at-risk for failure. She noted that, “As a classroom teacher, I believe that all children can succeed and I will continue to be a Harbor of Hope for all children, the same hope I was provided by so many of my teachers throughout my educational journey.”
The Crosby community has been blessed to enjoy Sharon’s participation in the community as she has raised district and campus monies for the American Cancer Society by her involvement in the Relay for Life. She has also been active in Delta Sigma’s fund raising efforts for the special needs people and special education students in the Crosby school district.
The portrait of the educational life and times of Crosby ISD’s Sharon Taylor has been created by the conviction that Sharon holds that she was truly born to teach. She considers teaching to be her life’s greatest passion. The fruit of such devotion is her unquenchable thirst to be more innovative, creative, and knowledgeable everyday. For Ms. Taylor, each day dawns to give her yet one more opportunity to introduce students to the world of education, and to help her students develop their self-esteem, their love for school, and their feeling of acceptance and value. Teacher of the Year awards don’t come along too often, and neither do teachers like Ms. Sharon Taylor.
