A High School Shelter from the Storm
By Robert Tatman

Crosby Independent School District provided the answer to the timeless question, “Who
is my brother’s keeper?”. The answer was the
evacuation shelter set up at the district’s high school. The hurricane menace
Rita was met head on by the many faces of help which provided shelter,
security, and amenities for approximately 1000 evacuees. Starting on the
afternoon of Friday, September 23, people of all ages made the trek to the high
school facilities many of which are new. Having advertised that the high school
would be a shelter starting at 12:00 noon on Friday, the district was pleased to offer Crosby High School as an evacuation shelter. However, the district was even more pleased
when so many took advantage of the building bringing family, friends, and
neighbors.
Staffing for this community
endeavor was provided by local agencies including local constables and EMS
personnel. The high school’s own Sgt. Nevil and other
constables maintained building security, and EMS
contributed their medical expertise. District employees shared in evacuation
responsibilities including Dr. Don Hendrix, the district superintendent, district
office personnel, a sundry of food service personnel, teachers, as well as
district maintenance workers.
The district would like to
express their appreciation for the untold number of volunteers who helped so
willingly and cheerfully. Time and space would not allow giving the thanks that
so many deserve. A special thanks for Dr. Hendrix who made the high school
shelter possible. His foresight and leadership during such a crisis will be
remembered by the community for a very long time.
