Crosby Varsity Takes
Waller Classic
A year and a day after finishing third, the
Crosby Boy’s Varsity team captured the 1st place trophy for the 2008
Waller Classic 4A Soccer Tournament. In
the two day tournament the boys played 4 games, scoring 22 goals and
surrendering only 5. On Friday the team
came from behind against Beaumont-Central, winning 5-2. In the afternoon match, Crosby
dominated the Navasota team 11-0. Saturday morning’s game against
Rosenberg-Terry determined who would advance to the finals. Crosby won
that contest 1-0 with a lone score in the final 6 minutes. The afternoon finals pitted the undefeated
Bay City Blackcats against our Coogs.
The Cats scored early on a penalty kick leading 1-0 at the half. The Coogs were able to even the score in the
2nd half leaving the game 1-1 after regulation. The Coogs didn’t need a fifth round of the
shootout to determine a winner. Goals
scored by Matt Garner, Eric Perez, Carlos Cepeda, and Steven Abernethy, and 2
saves by Elliott Trippel, sealed the victory 5-3. Congratulations, Coach
Helburg and the entire soccer team.
