The Growing Garden
Student Council representatives from 2008-09 had a vision to provide upcoming students at NES with an outdoor learning center where students could learn from hands on experience. The project was completely funded through money collected by Student Council during a variety of fundraiser projects. A parent volunteer built the sixteen 4 x 4 raised planting beds and the six 4 x 8 beds. Five of the 4 x 8 beds are placed in a fan shape and has been designated as the Butterfly Area. One 4 x 8 bed was placed along the chain link fence for climbing plants. The other sixteen 4 x 4 beds are for individual science classes and their personal growing projects. At present, there are butterfly bushes, chrysanthemums, and red tulip bulbs planted in the butterfly area. Wildflower seeds and blue bonnet seeds have been planted for spring flowering. Beds of kale, dill, green beans and other garden plants such as cabbage, lettuce, and upside down tomato plants are growing. The long range plan is to be able to add to the Growing Garden area a covered area with tables and benches where classes can go for writing and other outdoor projects. |
