Crosby School Board Attends Summer Leadership Institute

Michael Joseph, Superintendent of Crosby Independent School District, and the Crosby ISD Board of Trustees joined local trustees from across the state at the Texas Association of School Board’s (TASB) Summer Leadership Institute June 11-13 in San Antonio. More than 2,300 new and veteran schools leaders received in-depth training on every facet of effective board governance, heard keynote addresses from renowned education experts, and gathered valuable ideas from district programs that work.

Topics addressed during the two-and-a-half –day institute included college and workforce readiness, religious expression, teacher recruitment and retention, community partnership, and technology in schools. Breakout sessions also explored social media, the federal stimulus package and school finance, bullying prevention, emergency management, special education law, and school design, among others.
Thursday’s general session featured Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He focused on creating a climate of success for all students and explained how rapid and dramatic demographic and technological changes present our nation’s schools with enormous challenges.
David Warlick, Friday’s featured speaker, shared his view of a brand new world of teaching, addressing the global marketplace and what students will need to compete in the 21st century. Warlick, who is an educator, author, and leader in education technology, believes a different kind of learning experience is required for our students’ future success.

Special in-depth training sessions were available for new board members, covering basics in budget and finance, school law, district policy, teamwork, governance, and district planning and accountability. Board presidents’ academy sessions focused on basic responsibilities, meeting preparation, parliamentary procedure, key legal duties, and guidance for building team relationships.
