• Testing for Special Populations

Assessments for Students Receiving Special Education Services:

The STAAR program includes assessments for students receiving special education or 'Section 504' services. Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, there will be three versions of the STAAR test available for students with special needs. The three test versions are:

    1) STAAR-Alternate2 (similar to TAKS–Alt)

STAAR Alternate2 is the only alternate assessment offered for students with significant cognitive disabilities. STAAR Alternate2 incorporates a vertical alignment in the program's assessment tasks, and the high school assessment moved from grade-level assessments to course-based assessments.

    2) STAAR (STAAR with Accommodations)

A student receiving special eduction services or services under 'Section 504' can qualify to receive various accommodations on the STAAR paper test. These accommodations must be determined by the students ARD or 504 committee. For more information, please contact your students Campus Testing Coordinator or Campus Administrators.

The STAAR-A test version is NO LONGER available. (STAAR-online w/ embedded supports is a possible alternative available for students who qualify.)

    • The STAAR-M (modified) test version is NO LONGER available. (The final administration of the STAAR-M test version was given Spring 2014.)

For more information, refer to the Special Education Assessments webpage.

    Assessments for English Language Learners:

The STAAR program has developed two alternate test versions to meet the needs of English Language Learners (ELL) at different levels of English mastery. Linguistic accommodations are also available to allow ELL students to use tools that can help them display mastery in the subject content area instead of being hampered by the language barrier to showing content mastery.

*(These alternate test versions and linguistic accommodations are available for LEP students, on a case-by-case basis and must be approved for each individual student by the campus LPAC Committee.)

The STAAR test versions available for ELL students are:STAAR-L: An Online Test format available ONLY for mathematics, science, and social studies.

    1. STAAR-Online with Embedded Supports: Available ONLY for students as designated by the LPAC committee.
    2. STAAR Spanish: Available only for students in grades 3–5.
▫(Linguistic accommodations are not permitted for those taking the STAAR Spanish test version.)

For more information, refer to the English Language Learners (ELL) assessments webpage.

    Dyslexia Accommodations:

TEA has expanded its testing policies to include students with dyslexia and other similar reading disabilities.

Students that qualify for testing accommodations (as documented by an ARD, 'Section 504', or RtI Committee) will be allowed to take a STAAR assessment with accommodations; such as the oral reading of item stems/answer options and extended time.
