How do I log the books that have been read? Or the books that my child has read?
We expect all students to participate in summer reading activities by reading books and/or listening to stories read aloud. Students are required to keep track of the books they have read by logging their books through the HCPL Reading Program and Beanstack. Below is a link to find out more information about the library program.
You can also keep a paper log of your summer reading. Elementary students’ logs can be found here to print and use. If you choose to log in your minutes on a paper log, be sure to keep your logs in a folder or special place to hand in to your reading teacher at school by August 19th to get your certificate and credit for reading.
What reading goals would be appropriate to set for elementary students?
At the elementary level, we recommend that each child should read, or be read to, each and every day. If a busy schedule makes this difficult, please set goals for your students in grades K-2 to read (or be read to) for at least 60 minutes a week and students in grades 3-6 should be reading at least 120 minutes per week.
What incentives does CISD have for the students who read?
Students who turn in reading records to their reading teachers at the beginning of the following school year will receive a certificate of achievement and will be recognized by the campus for all their hard work. HCPL has a lot of fun incentives throughout the summer as well. Be sure to check the HCPL calendar for all of the activities throughout the summer.
