2024 State of the District
Wednesday, August 14 (Crosby, TX) - Today, Superintendent Patterson delivered her 2024 State of the District address to members of the Chamber of Commerce, local pastors and faith leaders, business owners, parents, and community members.
Superintendent Patterson thanked the community champions for all they had done and will do for the students and families of Crosby ISD this school year. "We could not have done the work without the people in this room. I want to say 'Thank you.' We need these partnerships, because these are our kids. Thank you for what you do, and thank you for being amazing."
Superintendent Patterson updated the community members on changes to academics. "We are working on 3 ways to improve student achievement this year. Number 1: Write a little a lot. We're not asking students to sit down and write a 5-page essay. Writing a little a lot will build their writing ability, their skills, and their stamina. Number 2: providing better instruction, and Number 3: more time on task."
Superintendent Patterson also spoke about the district's non-deficit budget approved by the Board of Trustees for the 2024-25 school year. "In the state of Texas this year, there aren't many districts like us. Most of my colleagues passed a deficit budget." It's estimated about 80% of school districts in Texas are operating in the red this fiscal year.
Superintendent Patterson also spoke about the new construction projects happening in Crosby ISD. The expansion of Crosby High School and the turf and track renovation at Cougar Stadium are the first new construction projects in the district in eight years. Superintendent Patterson also let community members know that the Board of Trustees has given the green light for the district to pursue the second priority on the facility priority list: a new middle school starting as a 6th grade center. Since the failure of the 2023 bond, the unfrozen 2017 bond monies have now collected enough interest to cover the cost of a 6th grade campus. Superintendent Patterson mentioned the planning is just beginning for the 6th grade center, and no land or location has been chosen yet.
Reflecting on her childhood in Crosby/Barrett Station, Superintendent Patterson talked about how little the roads in our communities have changed since she was a student in Crosby ISD. The infrastracture has not kept up in this area of unincorporated east Harris County. "That is just something to keep in mind when we're talking about traffic patterns and what's inconveniencing us, it is because we're not what we were. And the infrastructure hasn't really changed."
In the end, the most important stakeholders are our students. Superintendent Patterson said, "We have great teachers. We have great programs. But one thing that sets Crosby ISD aside from others is that we have great kids. Our students are the best that I've ever been around."
