Ready to Run!

Crosby, TX (January 10, 2024) – More than 20 students at Crosby Elementary School will run in the “We Are Houston” 5K race this weekend. The run, which is 3.1 miles, gives the students a chance to aim for a goal throughout the fall semester and beginning of the new year.

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have help from Crosby High School sophomore, Joshua Stillwell. He first developed a passion for running in 5th grade at Crosby Elementary School, under the direction of Coach Cindy Whigham. Now he runs alongside the younger students, giving them words of encouragement. “It means a ton. I just want to show the kids that running is fun … (I tell them) just keep going, keep your head up. Think about a good time.” This is Joshua’s fourth year being a junior coach for the CES Run Club. During the Chevron Houston Marathon weekend, he’ll run the 5K on Saturday and then the half marathon on Sunday. Josh is also passionate about running track and is a member of the Crosby High School Cross Country team.

Run Club Coach Cindy Whigham applied for and received a monetary grant this year, like so many years, to provide students with the opportunity to run at no cost. This year, students will receive race day t-shirts as well as running shoes for those in need.

The “We Are Houston” 5K begins at 8am on Saturday in downtown Houston. Assistant sponsors of the CES Run Club are teachers, Ms. Amy Graham and Ms. Emily Armstrong.

Crosby ISD also has two staff members who will be running on Sunday. Coach Whigham from Crosby Elementary will be competing in the Chevron Houston Marathon. Ms. Holly Lamb, teacher at Crosby High School, will be running the half marathon.

Good luck, Cougars!
