Crosby, TX (May 22, 2023) - This week, the Crosby ISD Board of Trustees recognized top scholars, top athletes, and extra-curricular groups this Semester. 

READ TO THE FINAL FOUR

450 third graders across Crosby ISD participated in the biggest Read to the Final Four event ever! Tonight, each student here is representing one class from each of our four campuses. 

In all, tens of thousands of students at nearly 200 schools competed in a bracket-style challenge, logging their minutes read between November and March. The contest was designed to coincide with the return of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four tournament in Houston. 

In the end, all four Crosby ISD elementary schools - Drew, Barrett, Crosby, and Newport - made the Elite 8. Half of the Elite 8 were our 4 Crosby schools. Newport Elementary made the Final Four, and finished in third place with more than 3.7 million minutes read. Third place out of nearly 200 schools.  

The grand total of minutes read was more than 12 million minutes.

We want to thank all the third grade teachers who dreamed up creative ways to read - during recess, camp-outs in classrooms, and even coffee shops in the hallways. The principals were also champions of this effort and our elementary librarian, Ms. Henderson. 

Ultimately, this was about improving our third graders as they transition from learning to read to reading to learn. We hope to see a return on the investment with our third grader reading scores going forward.

STUDENT COUNCIL

 

 

The Crosby High School Student Council is led by sponsors Mrs. Humphries and Mrs. Lamb. This year, the student council really grew! In fact, at 90 members, the 22-23 Student Council is one of the largest groups we have had in many years. It’s been an exciting and productive year for the council.  From helping with the district’s back to school convocation, homecoming festivities, pep rallies, and ending the year strong with organizing a Teacher Appreciation pancake breakfast and Senior Sunset to bid farewell to our 2023 graduates. Just to name a few.  Our student representatives have had a fun year and are already looking forward to, and planning for, a great 2023-2024 school year.

CULINARY ARTS

The Culinary Arts is led by sponsor Chef Espinosa. Here are a few of the achievements this year:

*$7,000 has been donated either by money or equipment purchases.

*We’re also happy and thankful for Skero’s furniture for donating a Commercial Steamer to our high school kitchen.

*All Seniors were “ServSafe Manager Certified” this year. Some have used it to secure jobs in the industry. Two students have earned College Credit at San Jacinto College where they are enrolled in the Culinary Arts and Pastry Programs.

*Very busy this year with Salad Bar, Restaurant Service, Holiday Bake Sale and Catering Events.

THEATER ARTS

Crosby High School’s Drama Department led by Mr. Blanchard had great success this year. Both their Fall Show “The Little Mermaid” and their One Act Play “The Beggar’s Opera” were delightful.  The Little Mermaid brought many members from different organizations in the Fine Arts department and made a fine production that thrilled the community with music, dance, and acting. The One Act Play competition saw Crosby High School advancing to Bi-District and securing several awards for actors and crew members alike. In addition to these shows and their resounding popularity with the community, the Drama Department also took part in the Houston Art Car Parade with another “Harry Potter” themed bus. These students also helped with hosting a 3A Area meet for the UIL One Act Play competition with great success. The students also contributed to the success of the CHS Dance Spring Show and the CHS Choir Pop Show.

COUGAR STARS

The Crosby High School dance team, the Cougar Stars, had an amazing year. The Cougar Stars are led by Ms. Jennifer Godoy. There are 42 members of the Cougar Stars dance team.  Among the highlights:

• They performed on the Carnival Cruise Ship

• 9^th graders- Elle Parker and Aylene Martinez placed at Solo Competition

• 10^th grader- Ciara Wilkins placed 3^rd in her overall category.

• 11^th grader- Madison Dorsey won the Solos at the Marching Auxiliaries competition

• The team received Best in Class in multiple team and office categories.

• The team brought home several 1^st place trophies including a sweepstakes trophy for team and officers at both competitions they attended.  

We love seeing all the hardware you brought home. 

BOYS SOCCER

Boys Soccer is led by Coach Helburg. The boys soccer team finished second in district this year with an overall record of 16-6-3.

GIRLS SOCCER

 

The Girls Soccer team is led by Coach Burgess and Coach Marek. The Lady Cougars soccer team had a great season in which they finished with an overall record of 18-5-3 and a third place playoff seed.  During the season, the Lady Cougars scored 95 goals, had 52 assists, and 10 shutouts.  The girls also represented Crosby High School very well with two All region players, a District Defensive MVP, three 1^st Team, three 2^nd Team , and three Honorable Mention All District players.  The Lady Coogs also had 14 girls maintain at least a 90% average for the season, earning them Academic All District Honors.  Your coaches are very proud of the team's accomplishments this season.

BOYS TRACK

This year the Crosby Cougars enjoyed another tremendous track and field season. The JV team won back-to-back district championships with a dominant performance at the district meet. Our Varsity team had many impressive individual performances. Braden Womack broke the school record in the Long Jump and advanced to the UIL State Track Meet, where he finished with a bronze medal. Ty Lovas broke the school record in the pole vault, was the district champion, and advanced to Area. Logan Ashby broke his own school record in the mile and advanced to the area meet. Levi Fontenot medaled at the district and area meet in the 200 and placed 9th at the regional meet. Jeremiah Batiste got on the medal stand at every track meet he attended this year, including the regional meet. We had over 60 boys participating in some level of high school boys track and field in 2023. The hard work of Coach Frick, Harrison, Jones, Poth, Talbott, Tims, and Wofford made our season a year to remember for the cougars.

GIRLS TRACK

We are so proud of our Crosby High School girls track team for a successful track season. Through hard work and determination, we had an amazing season that resulted in a record-breaking 4x400m relay and multiple regional qualifiers: Mayte Tavarez in the 400M, Abby Ellisor in the 100M hurdles, 300M hurdles, and 4x400M relay, Olivia Darbonne in the 4x400M relay, and Makayla Cheeves in the 4x400M relay. We are especially proud of our multi-sport athletes.

BOYS GOLF 

The Boys Golf team is led by Coach Carr. The boys team this year was a young group. We tied for third at District and had a tremendous amount of growth. We are looking forward to next year’s season!

POWERLIFTERS

 

Powerlifters are led by Coach Poth. It was a Great powerlifting season with 24 boys and 7 girls participating. We achieved unbelievable gains in this program for the 2^nd year in a row. We sent two girls to state and qualified 3 boys for Regionals. Levi Fontenot was the Boys MVP and Xandra Hernandez was the Girls MVP. We appreciate all the hard work and the 5:30am workouts. The parent support was awesome.

And get this! Several of these powerlifters including Levi Fontenot, Braxton Bowling, Xandra Hernandez, and Madison Lemond can each lift upwards of three times their body weight.

SWIM 

The Crosby High School swim team had another strong season. Their parents and supporters traveled from Baytown to Friendswood, Deer Park to Texas City this year. 

10 of our swimmers advanced to compete in Regionals.  

• Xandra Hernandez (placed 1^st in the 50 freestyle in District, 2^nd in the 100 freestyle, and was part of the girls 200 Freestyle relay who placed 1^st in District)

• Lainey Carden (placed 2^nd in the 100 backstroke in District, 4^th in 200 IM in District, and was part of the girls 200 Freestyle relay who placed 1^st at district)

• Madison Lemond (placed 2^nd in the butterfly, 2^nd in the 50 freestyle and was part of the girls 200 Freestyle relay who placed 1^st at District)

• Po’ Rodriguez (placed 5^th in the 100 breaststroke in district)

• Cade Crocket (placed 3^rd in district for the 500 freestyle)

• Cayden Berry (placed 5^th in district for the 500 freestyle)

• Logan Ashby (advanced to regionals)

• Kayleigh Goodman (advanced to regionals)

• Caden Blessing (advanced to regionals)

• Aleicela Canela (advanced to regionals)

• Kayleigh Goodman (placed in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle at District)

BOYS BASKETBALL

Crosby High School Boys Basketball is led by Assistant Athletic Director and Head Coach, Edwin Egans. The group had their share of ups and downs throughout their winter season, just narrowly missing out on the playoffs. Despite this, the Cougars will look to take that next step with a relatively young roster, heading into the 2023-24 season. Some of the standouts this season included first-team, all-district selection Zachias Davis, as well as second-teamer Dylan Banks and the District 17-5A Newcomer of the Year freshman Evan Egans. Expect Crosby to resurge next winter with a revamped group with more experience. Coach Egans wrote: “As a staff, we are so proud of these players' work ethic and willingness to be taught the game of basketball. The players' togetherness allowed for team growth and player individual improvement that can better prepare them for the 2023-24 season.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL

 

The Girls Basketball team is led by Coach Melynda McGregor. The Lady Cougars had a great season despite some adversity and adjusting to a new coach.  With only 3 varsity returners this season, the Lady Cougars found a way to make it to the playoffs and clinch 2^nd place in district.  Although they fell short, they are only graduating 2 seniors, who will be missed.  They expect to come back next season even stronger and making it to State is still a priority! Thank you, Ladies, for a great season.

Many of the students here on stage have already graduated with an associate’s degree from Lee or San Jacinto College as part of our Dual Credit programs. It’s amazing to think they are college grads before graduating high school. Congrats!

SOFTBALL

The Crosby High School Softball team finished the year with a 27-8 record. Making it to the Area round of playoffs, they came up short against Foster, but like all Crosby softball teams, they played with grit, heart, and relentlessness, leaving it all out on the field. This team learned to fight through adversity and weather. For our seniors, they battled covid when they were first-year students. Through it all, they never lost sight of their goals. One of their biggest accomplishments this year was not on the softball field but in the classroom. 16 of our softball players made academic All District, which means they maintained a 90% average during the 3^rd nine weeks, which is right in the heart of the season. Coach Fox and Coach Gregory are extremely proud of all these young ladies!

Coach Fox also wanted to give a shoutout to the team’s manager - Lilly Mooneyham. She’s the backbone of this squad. Congratulations everyone.

BASEBALL

The Crosby High School Baseball program is led by Coach Hutcherson. Baseball just wrapped up a very successful 2023 Season.  Cougar Baseball finished runner up in a very good district 17-5A.  The Cougars then went on to win the Bi-District Championship where they defeated Santa Fe 2 games to 1 in the series.  The Cougars ended as Area finalists after dropping a great series with Fulshear.  The entire Coaching Staff is extremely proud of this season and all that was accomplished.

For the “Texas High School Coaches Association” Academic All-State honors, Kade Wrobleski, Landon Parker, Jovanni Saenz, and Weston Roach all received honorable mention.

Sean Bazmore is your District 17-5A MVP. Sean is going to have a busy June. He was selected to play in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All Star Game in June. This is a huge honor. Only about 40 players across the state from 5a and 6a schools are selected to play in the game. Sean will also be playing in the “Greater Houston Baseball Coaches Association” All-Star game at Constellation Field in June. We’ll be rooting for you. 

Also, congratulations to Kade Eudy who will be playing in the “Greater Houston Baseball Coaches Association” Futures game next month at Constellation Field in Sugar Land.

The baseball team would also like to recognize their amazing manager this season, Tavarius Baldwin. I want to quote Coach Hutcherson, who wrote this on Twitter:

“Not sure it’s possible to love a kid more than I love our guy Tavarius. Never missed a practice or game and was invested in the squad with his whole heart and soul. We are all better because “T” wanted to be a part of the ride. When it ends… it’s always too soon.”

BASS CLUB

The Crosby Bass Club is in its 7th year of existence here at Crosby High School. The 2022-2023 year long fishing season came to a close in April. When all was said and done, the Bass Club won 2 tournament championships and a divisional championship Six anglers also advanced to the Texas High School Bass Association State Championship.

They just finished their state tournament yesterday (May 21st) at Sam Rayburn Lake. And for some, they fished on Saturday, went to prom on Saturday night, and they were back fishing at 6am Sunday.

We just received the results today. The Bass Club finished in 11th place overall. This is the best finish ever for Crosby High School as an overall school team.

For individual teams, Landon Darjean and Weston Roach finished in 14th place out of 207 teams. They each received $750 in scholarship money.

Joshua Garrett and Weston Browning placed 43 out of 207 teams.

Bass Club sponsor, Mr. Thompson, would like to thank the sponsors for their generosity, parents for their time and effort, anglers for never quitting. He wants seniors to remember that the tradition of never quitting never graduates. It’s a lesson for life. You’ll be missed as you go off into your next chapter!
