Barrett Station, TX (February 14, 2024) - Today, the Crosby Area Retired Teachers Association (CARTA) presented Crosby ISD Superintendent Paula Patterson the Black History Month "Excellence in Education Leadership" Award!
The ceremony at the Riley Chambers Community Center included remarks by CARTA members, Dr. Nell Pringle and Wanda Matthews. The group also shared memories of their time teaching in Crosby ISD, which included teaching Superintendent Patterson when she was a student in Crosby ISD.
Superintendent Patterson is a proud graduate of Crosby High School. Her husband and two sons are also Crosby High School graduates. She has served as Superintendent of Schools since 2021, when she returned to Crosby ISD for the third time to serve at the highest level of district leadership. She previously served as a teacher and principal in Crosby ISD.
CARTA presented Superintendent Patterson with a plaque and commemorative scarf in Crosby ISD red. During the ceremony, Pringle said, "We appreciate Superintendent Patterson and her staff for what they are doing to help the Crosby Independent School District." Matthews added, "This is Black History Month, and she's making history. She's the first Black Superintendent of Crosby."
Superintendent Patterson was invited to speak, and she shared, "The only reason I'm here is because of you. Many in this room taught me. Those of you who poured into me, truly, I mean it from the bottom of my heart, I didn't make it here by myself. I am just one example of the seeds you have sown in Crosby ISD. I appreciate the books. I appreciate all you do for us. Because you are educators, I know you want the very best for us."
The Crosby Area Retired Teachers Association (CARTA) is a unit in District 4 of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. The group continues to give back to the Crosby / Barrett Station communities. Each year for the past 15 years, CARTA has given two scholarships to qualifying Crosby High School students. The group of retired teachers also donates books to one Crosby ISD school each year. This month, the organization donated more than 87 books to Crosby Elementary School for their library.
